Wild Kingdom

It seems the garden is forever providing us with our own little backyard Wild Kingdom show. Last year's highlights were a praying mantis hatch

and the waterskippers we brought home from an undisclosed location and installed in the waterlily tub.

We fed them half-swatted flies. Half-swatting is a very refined skill which takes days of practice and it's also very important because the waterskippers locate their prey by its movement on the surface of the water. A fully-swatted fly, as it doesn't wiggle and buzz and struggle, is simply a life wasted.

We had a successful population that even gave us what every waterskipper parent secretly longs for: grandskippers.

This year's first Wild Kingdom episode features our cute, new little friend Scorpy Scorp, which Greg encountered not in the yard but walking across the kitchen floor in the middle of the night. Fortunately he (Greg, not the scorpion) was wearing his fuzzy safety slippers.

We've been feeding him/her? spiders until we finally remembered to take him out and set him free in Chris and Derrell's yard.
