Riff Raft - Packrafters in the Grand Canyon

by Greg

A huge canyon. A mighty river. Those who thread their way through the 200-plus miles of scenic flatwater and intimidating whitewater tend to choose big inflatable rafts loaded with hundreds of pound of gear. But our scrappy crew of eight slipped into the January water in our tiny packrafts —leaner, lighter, and still highly capable boats.

The experience was remarkable. We were able to cover plenty of river miles each day, with time to see the sights and hike side canyons, even with short January days. We were up to the challenge of the whitewater. And we were able to revel in the scenery and sense of a place that is frequently incredible, often sublime, and occasionally otherworldly.

For now, at least, I’ll let a few photos paint the scene rather than try to further explain the whole huge adventure that is still sorting out in my mind.
